Designing a Curriculum
In the last topic we examined how to determine the recommended curriculum framework for your subject area and grade level. We also examined the ELL Overlay that outlines how to support English language learners in your classroom. A curriculum framework is the skeletal structure from which to base your instruction. What it contains and how well it is organized is essential to creating instruction that is meaningful, motivating, and aligned to the standards.
In this section we are going to explore a backwards methodology to create a fully-aligned curriculum that follows a clear learning progression. At the end of this topic it is likely that you will want to revisit your lesson plan to improve the alignment of the learning objectives and assessments you have created thus far.
After completing this topic you will be able to:
- Align your lesson plan with Pennsylvania's Recommended Curriculum Framework.
- Derive core competencies into learning objectives and design a lesson that follows a logical learning progression.
