Module One: Fundamentals of Responsible Behavior
At the completion of this Module, you will be able to:
- Relate the meaning of Self-Responsibility and explain its value in managing students in your own classroom.
- Describe the nature of personal power and how it relates to a student's ability to be responsible and self-directed.
- Discuss and explain the concept of mental models and how they relate to a student's ability to be self-responsible and self-directed.
- Complete brief research and exploration on the topic of "Self-Responsibility," "Personal Power," and student success.
Module Two: Personal Power - Choices and Teacher Talk
At the completion of this Module, you will be able to:
- Identify and explain specific Power Strategies – instructional strategies designed to help students grow in personal power – and how they can be used in the classroom.
- Explain the value of having students make their own choices about their behavior
- Develop options for student choices in one’s own classroom.
- Plan, implement, and evaluate the effectiveness of selected Power Strategies in his or her own classroom, including but not limited to the following: specific communication strategies teachers can use (Choices, Teacher Talk strategies, The STAR Technique)
Module Three: Attributes and Self-Responsible Language
At the completion of this Module, you will be able to:
- Use strategies for helping students see and feel the role they play in creating their own experiences
- Define Self-Responsible language as it can be used by students and teachers
- Plan, implement, and evaluate the effectiveness of selected Power Strategies in his or her own classroom, including but not limited to the following: Attribute Awareness and Self-Responsible Language
Module Four: Mind Skills
At the completion of this Module, you will be able to:
- Plan and implement the effectiveness of 11 “Mind Skills” to help students take control of their own lives (Mind Skills).
- Discuss and reflect the importance of an application of "Character Education" in schools.
- Develop a characterization or embodiment of “Personal Power” qualities.
Module Five: Problem Return Technique and Solution Seeking
At the completion of this Module, you will be able to:
- Develop a plan for using the Problem Return Technique to solve a student or students’ self-responsibility issue.
- Apply the Solution Seeking Process to a student’s (students’) case in your own classroom.
Module Six: Mental Models
At the completion of this Module, you will be able to:
- Explain the concept of Mental Models and how they relate to a student's ability to be responsible and self-directed.
- Identify and describe the 18 Mental Models and the specific instructional strategies associated with each.
- Plan and implement the effectiveness of Mental Models strategies in his/her own classroom.
Module Seven
At the completion of this Module, you will be able to:
- Plan, implement, and evaluate the effectiveness of five specific strategies associated with the Educate step of the 4-E model: Direct Teaching, Build a T Chart,Red Light/Green Light, Curriculum/Stories, Modeling) in his/her own classroom.
- Visualize and explain how you will allow your students to experience and apply a self-responsible behavior.
- Describe how you would teach students how to examine and evaluate their self-responsible behavior.
- Determine a course of action for providing consequences for students in a fictional scenario.
Module Eight: Positive Student Confrontation
At the completion of this Module, you will be able to:
- Apply the steps of the Positive Student Confrontation process to work with a student or young individual.
- Reflect on and continuously evaluate personal practice, adjust accordingly, and actively seek out opportunities to grow professionally using the knowledge and skills of this course.
- Work Collaboratively to share knowledge, skills, and experiences, refine understanding of content, give and receive feedback, and improve expertise.
