Participation in Online Small Groups
In an online environment there are challenges and rewards in working in a small group, just as there are in face-to-face courses.
Benefits of working in a small group include being able to:
- Experience the small group process online.
- Focus on a specific role and perspective.
- Consider differing perspectives of others.
- Share the workload.
- Learn from your peers.
Making a valuable contribution to group work involves:
- Maintaining a positive attitude.
- Completing individual tasks on time.
- Posting early in the week.
- Checking the discussion board throughout the week for group member's postings.
- Sharing your thoughts and ideas.
- Encouraging and supporting others.
- Offering constructive suggestions that move the group forward.
- Staying focused on the task during discussions.
As an individual, you will not be penalized if a member of your group fails to participate. You may use a rubric to evaluate your own participation in your small group.
