Modifying Lessons
Step three of the Standards-Based Model for DI is to create and modify lessons and activities. The goal is to identify content and activities that will be appropriately challenging for all of students and provide support for students’ success. Two key questions drive the modification of lessons:
- What do I know about my students’ readiness, interests, and learning profile preferences that will make the activities in this unit of study accessible and engaging for all of my students? (You learned about these areas in Module Two.)
- How can I adapt the content, processes, and products of this unit of study to make it accessible and engaging for all of my students? The following learning activities provide practice in creating and modifying lessons.
As Catherine Thome states, “Teaching is not about a collection of activities around a topic or theme. It is first about clearly established learning goals and then about selecting activities designed to meet them.”
