Engaging All Learners: Learning Styles

GlobeGlobal/Random Learners

People who show global style (some models call this "random") prefer to look at the big picture. This learner is comfortable with a flexible, nonlinear course design. The global learner likes to look around and explore, not necessarily in a prescribed order from front to back or beginning to end. The global learner often makes intuitive leaps in understanding.

This type of learner likes content in large chunks, and truly prefers to understand the big picture first. If the global learner does not understand the big picture, the details will be difficult if not impossible for them to master. The global learner will likely jump around in a course to get a sense of the big picture, and might begin working on multiple sections of a course simultaneously if a topic proves relevant or interesting.

When global learners approach a new web page, it is unlikely they will make it all the way to the end without clicking a link and heading to another site. Global learners frequently jump from page to page, gathering information, finding out new details, and working to understand the bigger picture. When sending a global learner to a specific website, be sure to give guidance if a critical piece of information is at the bottom of the page.
