Pen & PaperLearning Activity 2-B-1

Keep It Positive

[Forum]

20 points

  1. Write three negative statements that express what you don't want someone to do. Each negative statement should start with the word "Don't." You may use examples from online classes, face-to-face classes, or your family and friends.
  2. Next, rewrite each negative statement as a positive statement. Each positive statement should express what you want the student to do: a statement that is positively phrased.
  3. Post your negative and positive statements to the forum.
  4. Reply to one classmate's post by creating Needs/Benefit Statements for each of the positive statements posted by fellow classmates.

Example:

Negative Statement: "Don't post to the discussion board late."

Positive Statement: "Complete your discussion posts on time."

Needs/Benefit Statement: "Posting your discussions promptly gives others time to read them and respond."

Prep for Summary Post

[No submission]

  1. In the days ahead, focus on your use of the word "don't." Each day, consider ways to positively phrase directions you are giving to your students, colleagues, or family members. Include Needs/Benefit statements whenever possible.
  2. You will be sharing your experiences using Needs/Benefit statements (and the other verbal skills we'll be working on in this module) in your blog for
Activity 2-D-2. Take the time to practice these skills both online and face to face this week.
