Module 1- Developing Number Sense- Integers Banner

Key InfoUsing Manipulatives to Demonstrate Rules of Operation

Number tiles that indicate both positive and negative value can be used to help students grasp the concepts and rules of operations. Positive values are represented by black tiles and negative values by red.

Here is an example of using manipulatives to illustrate the addition of positive and negative numbers. Try to visualize how you would demonstrate this concept to your students using number tiles.

Here is another example that demonstrates the addition of negative numbers. Similarly to the example shown with numberlines, these integer tiles can give students the opportunity to demonstrate their number sense of how negative and positive integers 'behave' in simple operations.
