Van Hiele Model

The following readings will give you more information about the van Hiele model of geometric learning levels. As you read, remember to think about the types of geometric activities your students need.

  1. Insert the CD that comes with your Navigating through Geometry text. Click on Readings. Read both of the following articles: The van Hiele model of the development of Geometric Thought by Crowley and The van Hiele Framework by Malloy.
  2. How do you feel about the theory and examples presented in the articles? Does your own experience – either as a student or as a teacher of young people – support what is being said? Post your responses to the Forum under "3-C-1: Van Hiele Discussion." Cite examples in your post.
  3. Reply to at least one classmate.
