Comparing and Contrasting Standards

As you delve more deeply into NCTM principles and standards and focal points, you might see a connection between them and your state curriculum.  It is important to make that connection so that you can further investigate NCTM and utilize the plethora of resources that are available and apply them to you own curriculum.

Assignment Instructions:

Read the "How the Curriculum Focal Points Relate to Principles and Standards for for School Mathematics?" in Curriculum Focal Points for Prekindergarten through Grade 8 Mathematics: A Quest for Coherence, (PDF pages 17-18).

Use the worksheet "NCTM Table" provided and fill out the "Example from My State Curriculum" column. (Note: when you click the link above the document will download directly to your computer or desktop). Answer the following questions and post answers to Assignments in "Activity 1-B-2: Compare and Contrast Standards." In the same document answer the following questions.

  1. How closely does your state curriculum align with NCTM? Are there any identifiable gaps?
  2. Why is it important to have curriculum that is interpreted as more than just a list of "things to cover?" 
  3. How do you use the curriculum to help you meet the needs of all students?
