Geometry for Middle School Teachers - Module 1

Constructing a hexagon using ruller and compassIntroduction to NCTM Standards and Focal Points

This course is designed for educators, many of whom teach in different states. To provide a common background, you will investigate the NCTM Principles and Standards to use as a framework for Geometry.

It is important, however, as you explore NCTM, that you consider your individual state's curriculum to make this experience more personal and relevant. In some states, middle school includes grade 5, but NCTM looks at grades 6-8 for middle school. In this course, you will incorporate grade 5 into your focus on middle school.

This course has you review these curriculum focal points and standards at the beginning of the course so that you can develop a 'big picture' understanding and awareness of the breadth of Geometry topics. Throughout the course you will be asked to return back to both the NCTM standards and your own state or district standards to see how the course content can be applied in meeting these standards.
