Reinforcing Student Self-Directedness

This module explores the characteristics of self-directed learners. If students are engaged in the learning process at an appropriate level of challenge, they begin to develop skills that build self-directedness. Each of the DI strategies presented in this module is designed to build and reinforce student self-directedness. The module concludes with ideas about how to meet the needs of your advanced and gifted learners.

 

 

Module Seven Objectives

At the completion of this module, you will be able to:

• Examine and reflect on characteristics of self-directed learners.
• Apply role-based DI instructional strategies (Game of Self-Direction and RAFT) that support the development of student self-directedness.
• Use specific DI strategies to individualize learning.
• Examine myths and truths about gifted learners.
• Explore ways to reach and teach gifted learners in a mixed-ability DI classroom.
