CrossroadsAllies and Adversaries

Open door in darknessThe doorway of knowing self and knowing students brings us to a place where Howard says we must tell students, "I see you. I acknowledge your presence in this classroom. I know your name and can pronounce it correctly. I respect your life and intelligence. I believe in you and hold both of us accountable to honor your capacity to learn. I enjoy being in this work with you."

For an educator to be in the position to say to students, "I see you, believe in you, and enjoy working with you," requires that we become advocates for our students in ways that support our beliefs.

Advocates and allies SPEAK UP and take a stand against injustice.

In the words of Martin Luther King Jr, "Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere."

We can't stand still on the escalator or wash our hands of pollution; we either actively work against injustice or we participate in it and from it.

The Eastern Illinois University: The Safe Zone Project - Becoming an Ally site shows actions of allies. Although this is from an LGBT ally group, the principles apply for helping all target groups.

The Ally or Adversary "Y" Model includes an image showing a decision point where we must each make a choice about whether we will become an ally or an adversary. Examine this graphic and see where you feel you are on the model. Have you made a decision yet?
