STAR Technique
Forum - 14 points (9 points for the post and 5 points for the reply)
- Read “Response-Ability” and “PP Strategy Six: STAR Technique” in Key Information.
In the Key Information example, the student with the red hat has several opportunities when he could Stop, Think, choose an Action, and Review the results. The times in the situation when he could use the STAR Technique are listed in items 1 – 6 below. Identify an alternative and consequence for each of these times. (You may want to ask yourself, “If the student stopped here, what alternatives would he have at this point? If he chose this alternative, what would be the potential consequences?”) Although some alternatives may be more desirable than others, refrain from judging or evaluating them; simply state them.
- When he puts the hat on in the morning before school.
- When he puts the hat on to go out for recess/end of lunch break.
- When the other student approaches.
- When the other student grabs the hat and takes off running.
- When he catches up to the student who took the hat.
- When recess/lunch break is over.
- Briefly describe a situation from your own experience in which using the STAR Technique would have helped a student gain personal power.
- What alternatives could the student have chosen?
- How might choosing one of these alternatives have affected the outcome of the situation?
- Post your responses to the red hat example followed by your own classroom example to Forums 2-C-1: STAR Technique.
- Read others’ postings and reply to one person.
