Module One: Introduction to Instructional Design
Welcome to the Instructional Design for Online EducatorsTM course. This course has been developed to help you acquire the skills and knowledge to design, develop, and implement online instruction. During this course you will have the opportunity to design your own online course through the application of instructional design principles.
Module Two: Instructional Design Models
In this module, you will be introduced to the ADDIE instructional design model including the major steps of the process and how they relate to designing instruction. Next, you will explore additional instructional design models and compare these other models against the ADDIE model.
Module Three: Types of Online Courses
There are a variety of online course formats to consider when building an online course. In this module, you will analyze the synchronous course format, the asynchronous course format, and other course formatting options.
Module Four: Conducting an Analysis
Typically, a needs analysis is one of the first steps that an instructional designer performs in the design life cycle. In this module, you'll discover how you can apply a needs analysis to a course. You will also analyze the context of the course and the students who will be taking it. You'll round out this module with how to review a needs analysis so you can apply the information to your development process.
Module Five: Determining Course Outcomes
In this module, you move from the analysis phase of the instructional design process to the design phase. You will decide on course goals, create terminal and enabling objectives, and brainstorm assessments that will measure objectives.
Module Six: Curating Course Content
In this module, you continue with the design phase of the instructional design plan. You will discover the importance of outlining your online course, chunking the information, and selecting content. You will also explore the importance of copyright in an e-learning environment.
Module Seven: Building the Course
In this module, you move into the development phase of your instructional design process. You will explore the types of media that can be included in online courses and accessibility issues to consider. Then you will discover visual design principles and examine content layout techniques. Finally, you will analyze various course authoring tool options used to build course content.
Module Eight: Running the Course
In this module, you enter into the implementation phase of the course design cycle. You will explore the learning management system (LMS) that will house your course. Next, you will consider field testing and the possible benefits for your course. Finally, you will review general considerations for preparing to teach an online course.
Module Nine: Evaluating the Course
In this module, you enter into the final phase of the instructional design cycle: evaluation. First, you will discover the differences and similarities between formative and summative evaluations. Then you will explore how to assess student, instructor, and course performance. Finally, you will put everything that you have learned together into a project plan for your online course.
