FocusFocusing the Lens

After reading 1984 by George Orwell, Mr. Diamante's history class discusses the similarities between the society that Orwell wrote about and today's society. After a spirited discussion about privacy, he asks them to conduct research about privacy in the United States. Most students focus on their privacy in schools and at home.

Then, Mr. Diamante asks students to write a postlogue to 1984. They should include what they learned from their discussion about the book and research about privacy in today's society.

In the vignette, what other techniques could Mr. Diamante use to encourage students to extend their knowledge about privacy? What other subjects that 1984 touches on could Mr. Diamante bring out to keep students interested in learning? What techniques did students learn from this lesson that they can apply throughout their life? Are there Multiple Intelligences that Mr. Diamante could have included easily? Which Intelligent Behaviors does he model for his students? Is there anything that you would have done differently?
