Overview
Extending new information is viewed in two ways: 1) connecting known information and new experiences, and 2) using interest in new information to learn even more about a topic. This topic will focus on the second view, since the first has already been discussed.
Many times the information given in a textbook is really only the "tip of the iceberg" regarding a particular topic. Extending that information, especially in areas of student interest, provides opportunities for students to practice lifelong learning, like independent research using strategies taught for Before, During, and After reading.
