Focusing the Lens
Before heading out to play baseball, Mrs. Jones's fifth grade class reads the classic "Who's on First?", a skit by Abbot and Costello. Mrs. Jones hands each student a transcript of the skit, and they listen to an original recording of Abbot and Costello slinging words back and forth.
Once the skit is finished, Mrs. Jones has each write in his/her personal journal about how the skit is related to baseball and if they could follow along with the skit (giving an explanation if they couldn't). After the writing session is over, Mrs. Jones divides the class into teams and assigns each position by the name of the player in "Who's on First" (with gentle reminders of which position each is) before they head out to play a game of baseball.
In the above vignette, which content area was Mrs. Jones addressing? Which cross-curricular areas did it include? Which learning styles does this activity appeal to the most? How did Mrs. Jones include Intelligent Behaviors into her lesson plan? What would you have done differently?
