Chats
Use of synchronous chat can provide an enriching supplement to online learning. Students are allowed to interact with each other and the instructor in real time. They can ask questions about the material and discussion which they may not have thought of if they were responding to an asynchronous thread or discussion. Regular use of chat in a course can provide students with an opportunity to develop camaraderie and create a supportive group of learners.
Although synchronous chat is more informal than discussion board threads and its success can depend on a free-flow discussion between participants, a good chat session benefits from skilled moderation. Use the tips in Key Info to prepare yourself as a chat moderator.
