Read Wylie & Durrell List: High-Utility Words (PDF). Then choose a piece of children's literature, or write a short story that contains high-utility rime from page 4 of the High-Utility Words (PDF). (Please note that this activity will be easier if the literature contains nearly all high-utility rime.)

  1. Develop a lesson plan that teaches students to apply phonics to decode the words in the rime.
  2. Indicate the time frame for the lesson and make sure that your lesson plan includes learning objectives, instructional strategies, assessments, and a list of materials that will be used.
  3. Explain why you chose the rime, the literature, the strategies, and the formal and informal assessment methods used within the lesson. Describe any modifications that may be necessary to adapt the lesson to students who are having difficulty decoding text.
  4. Include a reflection on a special population who will need to be considered during the planning and implementation of this lesson.
