Introduction to Phonics Strategies
There are several approaches to teaching phonics. These approaches include:
- The synthetic approach
- The analytic approach
- Onset and rime
- Decoding by analogy
These approaches generally work best when they are blended to provide students with different ways to apply phonics. There is no one right way to teach reading and it will take some trial and error to learn how to best use the approaches to teach each individual student. You will probably find that some students respond best to onset & rime or decoding by analogy, and others may learn best by the synthetic or analytic approaches.
