After completing this module you will be able to:

• Differentiate between phonological awareness and phonics
• Explain what a student must know in order to use phonics to decode words  
• Describe phonics generalizations and develop strategies for teaching them
• Explain why phonics generalizations can be frustrating for some children to understand
• Develop strategies for teaching phonics using the synthetic approach, the analytic approach, onset and rime, and decoding by analogy
• Create formal and informal assessments to measure and track your student’s ability to decode text using phonics.
