Reading for Pleasure
Reading for pleasure requires carving out extra time in your students' already busy day. You must be able to fit it in amongst already scheduled events like homework or textbook assignments in your classroom. You might also encourage students to fit it in between sports or music practice, television, video games, eating, sleeping, etc.
Mostly, though, reading for pleasure requires a desire to make time to read. Whether you teach a specific content area or a self-contained classroom, you can encourage this desire by offering attractive and readily accessible reading materials. Discussing books and the emotions or thoughts they evoke with your students may also encourage a desire to take time to read for pleasure. Get them excited about reading!
