Strategies for Providing a Purpose to Read
By giving a purpose to read, teachers motivate students by giving them a reason to read. Motivated students have a much better chance of being successful. Therefore, by giving a purpose to read, teachers are actually facilitating students' reading success.
- the "W" of a KWL chart provides a purpose to read because students are reading to answer the questions that they wanted to know about.
- SQ3R (survey question Read/Recite/Review) strategy allows students to survey the material and then formulate questions based on the headings and sub-headings in the text. They read to answer questions that they have formulated beforehand.
- A partially filled out graphic organizer provides a purpose to read because students will look for the information that completes the organizer and "fills in the blanks." You can model text organization by partially filling the graphic organizer out for the students.
Preview Guides
Preview guides help students call up background information, build background information and/or set a purpose to read. They also offer an overview of what is to come and can be structured in a number of ways. Preview Guides can build background information, especially when introducing a new text structure. They can set a purpose to read by providing a graphic organizer in which to put certain information or giving categories in which to organize information.
