Before Reading
To improve comprehension of text, you must first demonstrate and teach specific strategies before students are asked to read an assigned text. In this module, you'll explore general areas that should be addressed before asking students to read.
At the completion of this Module, you will be able to:
- Articulate the need for pre-reading, during, and after reading strategies to create a foundation for successful reading.
- Develop a set of before, during, and after reading strategies for a specific lesson or unit.
- Compare and contrast the characteristics of cooperative learning and small-group learning and plan cooperative learning opportunities to include social reading strategies.
- Utilize specific motivational strategies to promote reading growth.
- Reflect upon how the needs of the diverse populations within classrooms are met by the application of the skills, strategies, and knowledge gained in this course.
- Plan reading and vocabulary strategies that are appropriate to the grade level and reading abilities of his or her classroom.
