Project Ideas
Sound recordings and sheet music can be used as the basis for projects that promote active learning and student participation.
Audio
- Students could broadcast a baseball or football game with just audio the way it was done in the 1920s
- Have students reenact the War of the Worlds broadcast or another radio serial
Sheet Music
- Have students create their own cover art for a modern song, the way sheet music cover sheets used to be created
- Collect sheet music showing responses to wars in different time periods. How do Civil War songs differ from WWII songs? How do WWII songs differ from songs from Vietnam? Students could research and compare songs for wars up to the current conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan.
- Students with sufficient music training could compose their own songs and write the sheet music. If students don’t have musical training, they can still compose lyrics and melodies by ear and record audio or video.
