Edison Sound Recordings

[Small Group Discussion]

  1. Read the overview of the Edison Sound Recordings from the Library of Congress collection.
  2. With your small group, select one of the Edison Diamond Disc Recordings to analyze.
  3. Discuss and complete the following with your small group:
    • Analyze the recording using the NARA worksheet questions for audio.
    • Describe your reasons for selecting this particular recording. Explain why you believe this recording could be effective with students.
    • Describe at least five ways the recording you selected could be used in the classroom. Try to expand ideas for different subject areas and/or grade levels. For each lesson idea, include a brief description of how this activity could help promote critical thinking skills in students.
  4. Elect one member of your group to post a summary of your final responses and attach the completed worksheet in your small group forum.

Note: Be sure to download the worksheet to your computer before starting the activity and to save your work.

  1. Use the Small Group Self-Assessment Rubric to assess your participation and contribution to 5-A-1: Edison Sound Recordings.
  2. Indicate the number of points you think you earned for each category (Contribution, Attitude, Working with Others, and Time Management) along with a brief explanation. Cite specific examples as necessary.
  3. Post your self-assessment to Assignments for your facilitator to read.
