M5A Key Info 2

Pre-reading Activities

Pre-reading activities establishes the purpose for reading. They provide the students with an idea about why they are reading the text, what information it contains, and how they can use this information.

Through pre-reading activities students will realize the importance of reading and learning. After the trip, the students’ prior knowledge will be greatly increased with concrete experiences. If students reread a book, they will have a new, more informed transaction that enables them to better interact with the text and comprehend the author’s meaning.

Reading is a social process, where the author relates his or her knowledge, ideas, and observations. While reading, a reader will interpret these ideas based on his or her own experiences. As the student's prior knowledge (schemata) increases through discussion of the topic and reading additional books, he or she will have an increased interaction with the text and a more comprehensive learning experience.
