Risk-Taking Exercise

  1. Identify a tool or activity that you've been afraid or reluctant to try with your students (or in your workplace). If you don't have a tool or activity already in mind, find something from this list of Top 100 Tools that will push you out of your comfort zone.
  2. Implement that tool or activity this week—or take your first concrete (and scary) steps toward doing so.
  3. Compose a brief reflection on the experience and post it to the discussion board. Consider the following questions as inspiration for your reflection:
    • How did the reality of implementation compare to your fears?
    • How did you feel—as you got started, as you implemented, and after you were done?
    • Are you more or less likely to try something similar in the future? What about something similarly frightening?
    • Did you take a calculated risk or a foolish risk? And was it worth it?
    • Do you think such risk-taking will get easier with practice?
    • Was there some element of adaptability necessary in your risk taking?
  4. Respond to at least three of your classmates' posts.
