Choosing Self-Responsible Behaviors

Review the checklist of self-responsible behaviors. Add any additional behaviors that you think need to be added to this list.

You will be referring to this list and choosing different behaviors for various activities in this module. The goal will be to use the 4E's to increase these behaviors in your students.

Note: This activity is graded as an Assignment per the Assignment rubric. You will post this assignment to the Forums to share with your classmates.

1. Review the information on the 4 E’s to learn five ways to educate your students about self-responsible behavior.

2. Listed below are five activities. One of the activities is Required (Red Light/Green Light) and four activities are listed as Optional.

3. Complete the Required Activity AND complete Two of the optional activities.

    Required Activity: Red Light/Green Light

    a.       Identify and briefly describe an unself-responsible behavior you would like to eliminate in your classroom.

    b.      Construct several Red Light/Green Light statements you would use with your students to bring about the change in behavior.

    c.       Describe the results you would hope to have.

    d.      Respond to the following questions:

      • What number are you now?
      • What number do you want to be? Do you want to be a number one?
      • If you’re not the number you want to be, what changes will you need to make in your behavior?

    Optional Activity 1: Direct Teaching

    a. Choose a self-responsible behavior that is important for your students to learn.

    b. Explain why you want your students to learn it.

    c. Create a list of three to five steps that will help your students learn and implement the behavior.

    Optional Activity 2: Build a T-Chart

    a. Choose a self-responsible skill you feel your students need.

    b. Explain why you want your students to learn it.

    c. Create a T-Chart writing down what you think your students might suggest for “Looks Like” and “Sounds Like” behaviors.

    Optional Activity 3: Curriculum/Stories

    a. Choose a part of your curriculum or a story that you could use with your students to convey a message of responsibility.

    b. Briefly describe what you would use and why you would use it.

    Optional Activity 4: Modeling

    a. Briefly describe a time when you experienced the success of modeling a behavior, either as a teacher doing the modeling or as a student watching the modeling.

    b. Include specific details.
