Key Info

Simply stated, instructional design is a process through which instructional materials and learning activities are created. There are a variety of models that you may use to guide your instructional design process in a step-by-step manner, but one thing they all have in common is a systematic approach.

By using a systematic approach to your instructional design, you ensure that the results of that design are thorough and represent a full and thoughtful consideration of the various elements of the instructional context (learners, learning environment, objectives, etc.). Ultimately, following a systematic process facilitates and encourages the creation of high quality instruction.

Instructional design draws not only on models that guide the process, but also on theories of learning. These learning theories help ensure that the content and presentation of the instruction are sound and based on the latest research on human cognition and learning.
