Cultural competence is the will and skill to create authentic and effective relationships across differences. Developing these effective partnerships requires that educators reflect on their own views about the families with which they work.

Addressing any assumptions and biases will positively impact one's ability to foster authentic relationships with families. Knowing about the families in our communities is also essential to building these partnerships. Educators need to have a desire to learn about the groups their students represent.

A combination of knowing self and knowing the students and families will create strong partnerships with families that positively impact student success. Therefore, cultural competence is necessary for student success.
