Language Development and Components of Reading
The foundation of literacy skills is language development. In this module, you will explore language development through the four major theories of language development, how family plays a role in language development, the connection between language development and reading, and the two major early literacy organizations and their components of reading.
Module One Objectives
After completing this module you will be able to:
- Explain some of the common theories of language development and relate specific examples from your experiences to those theories
- Articulate the role of the family in language development and its connections to reading
- Explain the components of reading as stated by the National Reading Panel and the International Reading Association
- Describe how you can determine the readability of text
- Explain how students can easily determine if a book that they have chosen is appropriate to their reading level
