The Teacher's Mission
New Roles: A Perspective
Teachers must see themselves in different roles. No longer are we reaching all students as the dictator in the classroom. We must see our job as reaching all students. We cannot be content with only reaching the academically blessed and passing the rest off as “just not willing to do their part to learn.” We must feel responsible for all and endeavor – truly endeavor – to reach all. It is a challenge, but a challenge with a little effort and planning that can be met.
What must change is our role. We must be willing to get to know our students in such a way that we can plan interactive multimedia projects that bring all students into what they see as meaningful studies. Interactive multimedia projects must deal with real-world topics.
Meaningful educational projects will allow students to think through and solve real-world problems. Interactive multimedia projects will have real-world assessment by real-world people. Effective teachers learn how to communicate and reach their students. They make their students passionate participants in their own learning environment by making them an integral part of its construction. Interactive multimedia project-based learning will engage students’ natural curiosity, relate to their lives, and allow them to work side-by-side with the teacher to set priorities in their own learning.
